Zaera-Polo to lead the Berlage Institute

From 1 October 2002, Spanish architect Alejandro Zaera-Polo (born in 1963), will be the new leader of the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam, the prestigious international laboratory of architecture, urban planning and landscape.

Zaera-Polo – who takes over from Wiel Arets, head since 1995 – worked with Rafael Moneo (1989) and OMA (1991-93) before setting up in London, along with Farshid Moussavi, the practice ‘Foreign Office Architects’. One of their latest projects, the Terminal at the port of Yokohama, is due to open by the end of the month. His academic career is long and prestigious however, Zaera-Polo has taught at the Architectural Association, Columbia, Princeton, Yokohama University, the UCLA and the Berlage Institute.
