Baltic Centre: images by Etienne Clément

Transformed from derelict fifties grain mills and warehouse to brand new centre for contemporary art – the biggest in the UK outside London and due to open in summer 2002 - the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead has been designed by Ellis Williams Architects whilst the story of its evolution has documented by Etienne Clément.

The resulting photographs, which will be shown from 23 February to 14 March at the RIBA Gallery in London, start from 1998 when Clément first explored the abandoned building, following through to the summer of 1999 when the installation by Anish Kapoor "Tarantara" was set up inside its gutted shell, and ending with pictures taken over recent months as the project reaches the final stages.
