Last Sunday evening at the London British Museum, the prestigious Stirling Prize was awarded to the Magna Science Adventure Centre of Rotterdam, interactive centre dedicated to science. The project by Wilkinson Eyre Architects was to convert a steel making plant (a Millenium project) – two spans 350 metres long which constitute a shed that recalls to mind a church – prevailed over other six very respectable finalists, among which the Eden Project by Grimshaw, considered as the favourite.
Among the "losers": the project to extend the National Portrait Gallery in London (Dixon.Jones), the underground stations Portcullis House and Westminbster, London (Michael Hopkins and Partners), the London hospital complex The Surgery (Guy Greenfield Architects), the British Embassy in Berlin(Michael Wilford & Partners) and the housing estate The Lawns, in London (Eldridge Smerin).
