A travelling retrospective opens on 29 November at MAK in Wien dedicated to one of the key figures of 20th century Mexican architecture. The exhibition shows 40 projects, both built and unbuilt, illustrated by means of projections, documentaries and original prints by Armando Salas Portugal. What emerges are the different issues dealt with in the work of this Mexican architect: light and colour, the quality of modern living, the relationship between architecture and landscape and between architecture and the urban context. Barragán’s own particular themes also come across: the house as a refuge, the open space as an architectonic realm and interaction between inside and outside. The exhibition is divided into four sections, each dedicated to a significant aspect of Barragán’s career: “A biography of living”(houses designed for himself), “The architectonic landscape” (urban design projects), “The urban landscape” (projects linked to urban themes, the piazza, the tower, the satellite city and the developmento of the coastal region of Mexico), “The way towards abstraction” (Three projects: Casa Gálvez, Casa Gilardi, Capilla de Tlalpan). Until 28 January MAK (Österreichisches Museum für Angewandte Kunst), Wien Stubenring 5
