NEXT Architects: Melkwegbrug

A sculptural bridge, defined by a steep 12 metre-high arch and a gently sloping 100 metre-long underpassage, connects the historic centre and a new district of this small Dutch city.

Dutch architecture practice NEXT architects have completed a striking bridge in the small city of Purmerend, the Netherlands. Called the Melkwegbrug ["Milk Street bridge"], the bridge is part of the "De Kanaalsprong" masterplan, connecting the historic city center with the city's new district.

The bridge features a massive arch reaching a height of 12 metres above water level, in a continuous line with the Melkweg, offering views over the city and allowing those who cross it to appreciate the relation between the new and historic center of Purmerend.

"The aim of the design team was to create a new area with a specific identity, which could work as a connector between the old and the new centre," state NEXT architects. Adjacent to the massive pedestrian bridge, a 100 metre-long bicycle deck forms a second bridge, allowing for the remaining traffic to cross the river.

The pedestrian bridge weighs 85 tonnes, comprising 130 steps. Its shape flows evenly into the bicycle bridge, creating one single whole. This unity is enhanced by the continuity of materials and colours.
