Domus Sri lanka 22, August 2016
A rebirth in Sri Lankan architecture inspired by the ancient arts is the underlying theme of Domus Sri Lanka issue 022.

In the Projects section the design of the Kandy City Centre has been featured. It is a project that has ensured the design blended with the topography of the World Heritage Kandy City yet maintained contemporary and purpose-built interiors. The design not only drew inspiration from ancient Kandyan architecture, using influences from the Gampola period and bygone Anuradhapura era. A similar project featured is that of the office of the Credit Information Bureau of Sri Lanka. While here the exterior colonial characteristics of the building were restored, the interior designer was charged with creating a new-age open office concept within.

In understanding the impact of ancient architecture on the present and future, Feedback studies the three main architectural wonders of the Gampola Period. The motifs of the Gampola era continue to play an important role in Sri Lankan design and art. The Embekke Devalaya and its woodworks have especially played an influential role in modern architecture.

Another restoration project featured is the restoration the Walsh Street house built by Australia’s most influential architect Robin Boyd. Despite being a preservation of Australia’s 1950’s architecture, the house functions as a source of inspiration for modern ideas. In the Confetti section the international article on João Luís Carrilho da Graça who designed the Headquarters and Cultural Centre of Lisbon to match Portugal’s capital city’s historic Baroque topography has been included.

Other international articles featured in the issue comprise of a look at the new centre designed by Herzog & de Meuron for the famous collection of Rolf Fehlbaum, the founding nucleus of the Vitra Design Museum. Oki Sato, founder of the Japanese studio Nendo, explains how he creates a balance between experience and intuition, and ability and creativity. And finally, another project presented is the novel Salerno Maritime Terminal designed by Zaha Hadid Architects over the pristine waters of Italy.
