On the backdrop of urbanization, the responsibility of Architects in positively influencing society and supporting better urban planning is emphasized in this issue. Alluding to recent unspeakable horrors, the value of coexistence and learning from history is another important aspect.
The Sri Lankan project featured is that of the Brandix Head Office in Colombo, designed by Muradh Ismail. The modern ‘glazed box’ concept with minimal internal skeleton structure was used to maximise space as per the client’s requirements. The building is recognized, both locally and internationally, for efficient energy consumption. Also featured is the ancient architectural wonder, the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, which continues to inspire today’s architects and artists. The watercourse and water gardens of Sigiriya have for year’s sparked discourse on the science behind the ancient intricate waterworks.
Among the international projects featured are the Grace Farms, New Canaan, Connecticut – a famous Japanese office that morphs the indoor and outdoor and the McMurtry Building, Stanford University, California built to encourage new forms of education and collaboration. Claudio Luti’s his journey, ‘From Fashion to Design’, has also been detailed summarizing his exploration of innovation and challenge. One of his sketches adorns the cover of this issue.
Inspired by the classics, the edition also previews the collection by Issey Miyake dedicated to his master, celebrated graphic designer, Ikko Tanaka. The restoration of the Villa Reale in Monza details the proceedings of the first public and private collaboration applied to an Italian Heritage site. A summary of ‘the green element and the dwelling’ by Luigi Figini is displayed relating his 1950’s thoughts in today’s context.
