Germany

July-August

The second German Domus takes a look on Hamburg in the North of Germany. Surrounded by water the biggest river island from Europe is still a resource of ground to build for the growing metropolis. The area turned an experimental laboratory for future ideas as proposed by the International Building Exhibition Hamburg (IBA Hamburg). Around 50.000 inhabitants from more than hundred nations are living in the neighbourhood. With new building projects, many architects developed innovative ideas and patterns that might draw a way to future forms of living.
The July-August issue discusses flexible floor plans, cheap housing-forms, self-settling and building, green materials, pre-fabricated structures, or the reuse of a renovated, raw concrete post-war bunker as energypower-plant. It looks at the medieval German town Rottenburg, where the architects Lederer Ragnarsdóttir Oei (LRO) renovated and extended the bishop’s chair; integrative urban planning was also on the agenda in Vienna, where an ancient house will be used as apartment-sharing-community for former homeless and students. Then interviews the artist Karin Sander in her Berlin studio about the method for her miniature-sculptures, based on bodyscans and the 3D-printing-technologyand explores the research laboratory of Oscar Zieta and his newest experiments of steel furniture.
