BMW’s new XM SUV will be the first model of the M class to include an electric motor. Sport EV fans shouldn’t get their hopes up, though, as the new car will be a hybrid model with a V8 gas-guzzling engine as its main drivetrain.
XM’s hybrid motorisation with 750HP of power isn’t BMW’s only choice that's a bit unsettling. The new car sports a revamped design that seems influenced by the boxier look of vehicles such as the CyberTruck or Hyundai’s Ioniq 5. With two polygonal nostril-like air intakes with an LED contour, the aggressive front grille is a stark departure from the X3 M and X5 M lines and is frankly a bit generic. The same is true for the rest of the exterior, with sharper corners and edges that aim at redefining what BMW’s luxury line will look like. Despite the attempt at looking futuristic, the BMW XM is fundamentally a conservative car. A stance perfectly summarized by the XM’s disappointng 80Km full-electric range. In a market shifting rapidly toward electrification and sustainability, the XM stands as a powerful fossil fuel car concept aimed to the few who can afford this decadent luxury.
