This futuristic monorail shuttle would be cheap to install

Russian design agency Working People came up with the idea of a fully autonomous monorail pod that big cities could easily integrate into their existing infrastructure.

In the cities of tomorrow, reclaiming the space currently occupied by car-related infrastructure will be a must. As new forms of transportation emerge, urban planners could easily repurpose large streets and highways to host a lower flow of cars and new public vehicles that would offer more sustainable mobility options. The Urban Monorail Shuttle, designed by the Russian agency Working People, envisions precisely this kind of future outcome for our current urban infrastructure. The shuttle is a compact pod that could run on a monorail installed in the space between car lanes on large city streets or highways or to their side. In the designers’ idea, the shuttle pods would drive autonomously, relying on a pre-built monorail to move in either direction. Cities would build the system to be modular, with small-capacity pods that can easily be added or parked based on passengers demand. Each shuttle would sport state-of-the-art air filtration systems (because we’re in a pandemic, but also because minimizing airborne pathogens in an enclosed public space is always a great idea) and large sliding doors to make them as accessible as possible. Like many concepts, the Urban Monorail Shuttle is just a collection of well-thought-out renderings and will probably never get to production in this form. It’s still a great idea that we think could be easily implemented in sprawling cities with low urban density and large road infrastructures like Moscow or Berlin.
