Ergonomic seat by Plydesign combines tradition and technology

Frigate, a project by designer András Kerékgyártó, wins the If Design Award 2021. Sustainable and affordable, the chair is characterized by curved plywood features and the use of a special technology.

Frigate chair family won the If Design Award 2021 – an annual design award organized by the If International Forum Design GmbH in Hannover – as the best product in the Public/Retail category.

Selected from over 10,000 entries from 52 countries, Frigate aims to improve the quality of seating by raising ergonomic, sustainable, economic and aesthetic standards through manufacturing innovation.

The chair, designed by András Kerékgyártó for Plydesign, is made by combining tradition and technology: Frigate uses conventional molded plywood and 3D-Veneer, a technology developed by the German company Danzer that allows to design and industrially produce wooden organic shapes. The result is a high quality seat, characterized by the combination of wood, curved shapes and an efficient lumbar support guaranteed by the backrest made with 3D-Veneer technology.

Shell and legs are joined by a few screws and easily disassembled, resulting in a resistant and environmentally friendly seat (the wood is FSC certified, the surface treatment is water-based, the fabrics are certified OEKO-TEX® and EU Ecolabel).
