SodaStream is the world's most popular home carbonation system. Founded in 1903 in the UK and last year was aquired by PepsiCo for 3.2 billion dollars. Its last product is My Only Bottle, a “personal” 0.5 litres plastic bottle. “Following the megatrend of urbanization, people tend to spend more time out of home”, says Liat Kaplan, product marketing manager, global head of product and innovation di SodaStream International. “As a result, they are looking for personal on the go solution”. My Only Bottle can be used with many sparkling water makers of the Sodastream lineup such as Spirit, One Touch, Power, Source and Play. It is not only useful, but was also conceived with the noble intent to replace single-use bottles, one of the biggest cause of plastic pollution, with a personal container that can be filled and used multiple times through the day. Among many aluminium personal bottles that you can already sport in all the major cities in the world, My Only Bottle is made of plastic, like most of SodaStream's bottles, and that looks a bit odd.
So, plastic can be sustainable?
One SodaStream bottle replaces up to thousands of single-use plastic bottles so although made of plastic it is a sustainable alternative. We also offer a glass option but that is not really an option for on the go.
Are you researching on new materials?
We are always trying to improve ourselves and are looking into replacements for plastic on the long run.
How did you design it?
High importance was given to keeping the iconic SodaStream Fuze bottle shape also for this out of home option. Therefore, the design process focused on keeping the bottle shape while adding all the elements and features for an ultimate personal to go bottle: capable of resisting high temperatures and easy to transport.
More in general, what’s SodaStream approach to product design?
SodaStream values creativity as one of its core brand values. Our products have won many design awards over the years. In addition, SodaStream is supporting design education and is part of an internship program for design students.
