Ford created a self-braking supermarket trolley

But it's just part of a campaign about applying car-tech innovations to everyday's life.

If you recall the noise-cancelling dog kennel made by Ford some time ago, then you won’t be too surprised by the next installment of the carmaker’s “Interventions” campaign: a self-braking supermarket trolley. You heard it right.

The idea behind the whole “Interventions” project is to bring Ford’s automotive innovation into everyday life, to solve big and small (firs world) problems in fields that have nothing to do with cars. In the case of the kennel, the noise-cancelling system is used to protect the ears of our furry best friends from fireworks explosion, while the self-braking supermarket trolley would stop kids from causing collision during their trolley races in supermarkets (lucky me, I guess, as I’ve basically never witnessed such a problem), for the sanity of their parents and fellow adults shoppers.

Youngsters (or Johnny Knoxville and the Jackass crew) can still ride the trolley or push it on its way, but the built-in Pre-Collision Assist technology will brake if it detects an obstacle, keeping them from crashing into shelves, other customers, old people taking a stroll to enjoy the air conditioning in the summer, or the stereotypical pyramid of canned beans haplessly built at the intersection of the two main aisles of the supermarket.
