Fiat 500 Spiaggina ’58. The showcar of Italian Dolce vita is back on the road

Light blue body, rétro style and wind in the hair. The convertible two seats small car designed for the holidays of the glamorous sixties is better than ever, even though it just turned 60.

Ah the italian economic boom years. So great in everything that we are still taking advantage of their status symbols. A thought that, considering all the years passed since a good idea came to mind gives chills, but at the same bring the feeling of thanking God for a never ending heritage to ransack. This until the point when we will stop being a retromania society. Then, maybe, painfulness will follow. In the meantime, after the 2007 Fiat 500 reboot, is "dolce vita" mood again with the one of the first small car special edition: the Jolly Spiaggina create just for the lucky ones who had to struggle driving the costa amalfitana twists and turns, and in doing so needed fresh air and a clear sight, and therefore no folding top. Named Spiaggina like in the past but with ‘58 in addition – the year when it was commecialized and that makes it 60 years old sharp – Spiaggina ‘58 is a dear homage to the original model, full of hints that goes from the lateral moldings with 500 logo to the chrome finishes of the rear view mirrors; from vintage logos to the name Spiaggina written in beautiful italic.

And a new colour, a smashing and delicate “Azzurro Volare” (flying light blue – a hint in a series of many to the most famous italian song realeased in 1958: “Nel blu dipinto di blu” by Domenico Modugno). All the elements cosidered, everything is like the Jolly model, except the beautiful sixties style striped fabric canopy that covered the small convertible car, now substitute with a dull grey folding top. Well, a lot has changed since then: everything has to be proof against something, traffic rules are more restrictive and glamour coincides with being bourgeois. But thank God style icon and visionary Lapo Elkann is alive and kicking. And since he is not not afraid to have his vital rushes pushed back by anything, he gave us his own take on Spiaggina: the Spiaggina by Garage Italia. Made in collaboration with Pininfarina atelier is a car free of a folding top (like the sixties model) and with a small shower tap added in the trunk, perfect for a day at the sea. Now "that's" what we call Dolce vita with a capital D.
