At the 2028 Olympics, people will get around using flying taxis

The US-based company Archer will provide an app-based air taxi service at the event, with take-off and landing 'vertiports' planned in various key locations around the city.

Archer Aviation is planning to provide air taxi services for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, marking the first time eVTOL aircrafts serve an Olympic Games. The company had already planned to do the same for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, but the plan didn't go through as its electric aircrafts didn't pass European aviation tests in time for the event.

In LA, Archer will deploy its Midnight eVTOL aircraft, which can carry up to four passengers on 10–20 minute flights between Olympic venues. Built with 12 engines for redundancy, the Midnight is quieter than helicopters and therefore better suited to citywide flights at lower heights. The company plans to operate the service just like an app-based ride service, à la Uber. Prices are expected to be slightly higher than those of a luxury car transfer service.

Vertiports (i.e., vertical take off and landing spots), are planned at SoFi Stadium, the LA Memorial Coliseum, LAX and other key locations.

The last hurdle to clear is the same that cost Archer its Olympic dream in Paris: the company still needs FAA certification for commercial operations. If all goes according to plan, approval should be granted next year. After that, the company plans to scale up operations in order to have a large enough fleet of EVTOLs by 2028.
