MAD Architect’s ephemeral city promotes a different pace to nourish our inner space

On the occasion of the Aranya Theater Festival, set in North China, Ma Yansong’s firm has created a place to accommodate 300 artists.

On the occasion of the Aranya Theater Festival, between 12 and 25 June, inspired by the metaphor of avian migration, Ma Yansong’s The City of Time hosted Migratory Birds 300 – a 300-hour art residence, which brought together in 131 groups 300 artists from different fields. The project resulted in 194 works, including body art, installations, paintings, performances, sculptures, shows, and videos.

In real cities, the drive for functionality and productivity stifles intimate and personal spaces. This is why Ma Yansong created The City of Time by the sea, a place that “allows the substance of theater and art, to breathe natural life […]. Taking flight and transcending reality. It is a place dedicated to time, human behavior, and nature. Inspiring contemplation on our relationships with ourselves and the world”.
