MAD has unveiled its design for Sanxingdui Museum

Immersed in the lush nature of the significant Chinese archaeological site, the museum will host cultural relics dating back to the Bronze Age of the ancient kingdom of Shu.

Designed by MAD Architects, the Sanxingdui Ancient Shu Cultural Heritage Museum – located in the western area of Guanghan City, in Sichuan Province – will give its visitors the possibility to immerse in the Shu civilization, still largely unknown.

The protected Sanxingdui site hosts cultural relics 2800 to 4500 years old, including bronze eye masks and large bronze standing figures. The large spans of curved timber structure create big column-free spaces, which give great flexibility to the exhibitions.

Dubbed “The Eyes of Sanxingdui”, the project melted in the surrounding environment, preserving the dense greenery and the clear waters. Thanks to its pavillionary scheme, the green roof and the facedes design, it is able to mix landscape and architecture in a cultural public space.

During daytime the building facades blend in the surrounding nature, while in the night the rooftop skylights make the structures similar to the torch-like eyes behind the bronze masks of Sanxingdui culture.
