The first dismountable stadium in the history of FIFA World Cup has been completed

Colorful, functional and eco-sustainable, Stadium 974, designed by Fenwick Iribarren Architects, marks an important step in the design of sports facilities.

The Spanish studio Fenwick Iribarren Architects – with structural engineers Schlaich Bergermann Partner and engineering consultancy Hilson Moran – ahead of the FIFA 2022 World Cup has completed in Qatar the first sport venue in history designed to be fully demountable.

Formerly known as Ras Abu Aboud, the 40,000-seat Stadium 974, near Doha Port, is composed by a modular steel structure, partly recycled, and repurposed colorful shipping containers.

After the football tournament in 2022, the stadium can be dismantled and reassembled elsewhere, or reused in the form of smaller volumes. Furthermore, its modular design not only reduces material waste, but also constructions time and costs; and thanks to the attention to water efficiency it ensure compared to conventional stadium development a decrease in water use of the 40% .
