Yayoi Kusama exhibition at Renzo Piano's famous museum in Basel

The Beyeler Foundation will host a major retrospective dedicated to the renowned Japanese artist, featuring works that have never been seen in Europe before.

Starting on October 12, 2025, the Beyeler Foundation in Riehen will open the first Swiss retrospective dedicated to Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, an ambitious project offering a comprehensive overview of her artistic production, spanning more than seventy years of experimentation and visual research.

Curated by Mouna Mekouar and Charlotte Sarrazin, the show will occupy ten of the museum galleries and extend into the surrounding park, transforming Renzo Piano’s building into a truly immersive landscape. The Foundation’s glass façades, which open the interiors to greenery and natural light, will become an integral part of the dialogue with Kusama’s works—pieces that, through immersion, repetition, and visual vertigo, allow visitors to transcend physical boundaries of the self and enter a collective, sensory aesthetic condition.

The exhibition promises an all-encompassing experience, presenting around 300 works that highlight the breadth of expressive means through which the artist has shaped her eclectic language, constantly experimenting with painting, sculpture, collage, performance, and happenings. Alongside historic works such as the Infinity Nets, the Accumulation sculptures, Narcissus Garden (1966/2025), and the celebrated Infinity Mirrored Room: Illusion Inside the Heart (2025), visitors will encounter newly conceived site-specific environments, including a brand-new Infinity Mirror Room created specifically for the Foundation’s spaces.

After the Swiss stop, the retrospective will continue at Museum Ludwig in Cologne and finally land at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, where it will conclude its European itinerary on January 17, 2027.
