Finland – which shares the longest European border with Russia, 832 miles – has begun at the Imatra border crossing constructing a 124 mile fence, in order to boost security. It will be 10 feet tall, with barbed wire on top, and lights, loudspeakers and night vision cameras will be installed on it.
So far, the Finnish borders were simply marked by a light wooden fence; however, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the country felt the need to reinforce its eastern border, also because of the large number of Russians who began to flee after the mobilization of reservists ordered by Putin.
The initial segment of the barrier, of three kilometers, should be completed by the end of June.
