Domus 1014 on newsstands

In June issue: the Congress Centre by Francisco Mangado in Palma de Mallorca, Tony Fretton Architects’ City Hall in Deinze, Belgium, a house in Slovenia by Jabornegg&Pálffy, the design of Ron Giland and Francesco Faccin, the feedback on Athens and for free Domus Moda fashion supplement.

Examining the themes of awareness, imagination and profession, Nicola Di Battista concludes the cycle talking about freedom to construct a design theory and define for architects today a new way of working. Freedom inteded as a pause between one project and another, the right reward for a job well done and a premise for the next to come.

The Congress Centre in Palma de Mallorca is an imposing building facing the sea that highlights Francisco Mangado’s capacity to relate to a large scale site, while devoting great care and intensity to the interiors. Austrian architects Jabornegg&Pálffy designed a country house in Slovenia where the flexibility of living spaces is matched by advanced bioclimatic interior comfort control.

In the course of a conversation with Domus held during the past Milan Design Week, designer and artist Ron Gilad talked about his new adventure as the creative director of Danese Milano, explaining how he is building a future on top of the past. This month’s school is the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris-Belleville, which focuses on the architect’s social responsibility, highlighting the cultural, symbolic, practical and political sides of architecture. Manolo De Giorgi offers a selection of projects as an alternative to home living trapped in ideological schemes, looking for open-plan spaces.

Domus Moda is June’s fashion supplement curated by Carlo Antonelli: an ideal continuation to the two special issues curated by Alessandro Mendini in 1981, when he was director of Domus. This issue keeps the original graphic project, imagining, however, a panorama of contemporary fashion seen as a completion and blossoming of insights intercepted 36 years ago.
