Everything Architecture

At the Center for Fine Arts Brussels Kersten Geers and David Van Severen give us an overview of their work and that of fellow artists in a well-ordered field of objects.

Office, Collage Office Dar Al Riffa
The architectural firm Office Kersten Geers David Van Severen is known for its original architecture.
It is a place where practice and theory – creations and theoretical projects – stand side by side. The projects are direct, three-dimensional, and firmly rooted in architectural theory. The firm reduces architecture to its very essence and most original form: a limited set of basic geometric rules is used to create a framework within which life can be played out in all its complexity.

“Everything Architecture” is based on the view that each and every one of the office’s products must be seen as a project in its own right. In the exhibition models, drawings and perspectives from various Office projects are placed in the space almost as individual objects before being associated with a series of works of art, which are closely related to the spirit and language of this firm of architects. In this field of objects sculptures represent the travelling companions of the architectural production of Office. Paintings and photos strengthen or break through the different perspectives of the antechambers as they go in search of a dialogue.
The works of art have, for the most part, been created by artists who Kersten Geers and David Van Severen have developed a special bond with, including the likes of Bas Princen, Stefano Graziani, Richard Venlet, Rita McBride, Koenraad Dedobbeleer, Harald Thys and Jos De Gruyter. In addition, there are a number of works by artists who have played a key role in the Office frame of reference, including René Daniëls, John Baldessari and Lewis Baltz. The works of art, which have been carefully selected by Office, are more than just sources of inspiration. They all delve deeper into the ambiguity of representation and abstraction, whereby the way in which the works are seen to interrelate is of vital importance, both intrinsically and spatially.
