Designing from a single gesture: Vaselli’s latest collection

The Hoop series translates a morphological gesture into a family of travertine bathroom furnishings, where the poetry of the material meets the rigor of form.

The Hoop collection, designed by Kensaku Oshiro for Vaselli, originates from a rigorous formal study focused on a specific section—a sharply defined, distinctive gesture that, once rotated around an axis, becomes the generative principle for all elements in the series.

The section, not attributable to standard geometric figures such as circles or ellipses, generates a constant visual tension. Its rotation produces volumetric forms that appear to contain internal energy, emphasized by the plastic continuity of the curve and its abrupt interruption. This formal approach is consistently applied across all pieces in the collection, striking a balance between aesthetic language and constructive logic.

The entire collection is crafted from Bianco Rapolano Travertine, processed from solid stone blocks. The exterior is left open-pored and honed to highlight the tactile qualities of the material, while the interior is filled and polished to ensure water resistance and ease of cleaning—particularly essential for basins and the bathtub.

The edge, a key element of the design, features a substantial thickness that allows the curve to be fully expressed and makes the section clearly legible even at close range. Finishing the edge demands a high level of precision, especially given the porosity and complex nature of working with travertine.

The collection includes a bathtub, freestanding and countertop washbasins, round and oval mirrors (the latter also suitable for full-length vertical use), countertop surfaces, and accessories. Each element is designed to maintain formal and functional coherence, with volumes shaped through a subtractive approach that reduces mass where possible, without compromising structural stability.

The rotation generates volumetric forms that appear to contain an internal energy, emphasized by the plastic continuity of the curve and its abrupt interruption.

Hoop exemplifies how a project can originate from a single intuition and develop into a coherent collection in terms of language, function, and material relationship. In this case, the stone is not only appreciated for its aesthetic qualities but is also treated as a technical material with specific expressive potentials, made legible through a clear and measured design process.
