Born on the occasion of NY Design Week, Twice Light is Gianluca Vassallo’s photographic project in which Twice as Twiggy, the giant version of the lamp designed by Marc Sadler, has a leading role in the public spaces of NY City.
Vassallo mounted Twice as Twiggy at public spaces around NYC – Soho, Central Park, Coney Island and Chelsea – and invited those who stopped to observe to take part in his art through a social experiment. He asked them to spend a minute gazing into the eyes of a stranger, a fellow passer-by.
The resulting photographs created a collection of snapshots that are intimate and authentic. The photographs showcase the process of overcoming the social norm of distancing oneself from others. They are an assurance that something has changed in those people, even just for a minute, as they let their guards down and let a stranger in.
