Artifact

Curated by Noémie Bonnet-Saint-Georges, “Artifact” presents in Saint-Etienne the preoccupations of creative artists today and the forms that come out of them.

“Artifact” is an exhibition that dates back to the origins of the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Etienne and whose purpose is to present a selection of projects resulting from 500 international candidatures.

Unlike the other exhibitions where the curators invite designers and artists to show their work on a theme or based on affinities specific to them, “Artifact” is an opportunity to see what is in the air at the moment, to discover the preoccupations of creative artists today and the forms that come out of them.

It also allows to discover young talents and to show them side by side of designers already known. The 2015 edition of this exhibition therefore proposes a selection of very varied projects, ranging from industrial objects to poetic ideas, formal or conceptual projects, which illustrate the preoccupations of today's designers. A part of the selection is on display at the Bourse du Travail, an important historic site situated in the heart of the city, echoing another part on display in the H buildings at the Cité du Design – Manufacture site, which is hosting a part of the Biennial events.

The scenography take form as boxes, as a cabinet of curiosities. The visitor pass from a boxe to the other, and the link between the projects is made either by a formal game or by the tackled issue. On the other side of every boxe, some panels presents the projects, classified by themes, present in “Artifact #B” and “#H”, but also in others cadidates either shown in others exhibitions, or only in pictures, the tackled issue corresponding to the categories found in the various proposals sent.
