Scout Treehouse Almke

The young members of the Association of Christian Scouts (VCP) from Wolfsburg had taken on a project which was highly ambitious in a number of senses: they wanted to create a place in which a large number of scouts could come together, where one could be at one with nature, and where one could also celebrate.

They wanted a large treehouse for both sleeping and cooking. The treehouse was to be built on the Almke Camping Site near Wolfsburg. It was also intended that the energetic hands of the young people themselves would be used to construct this sanctuary. baumraum was contracted to design the treehouse and plan its construction. Before building could start, the scouts acquired numerous sponsors and the assistance of local institutions, without which the project could never have been realised. The treehouse was built with the support of the Wolfsburg Youth Council (Stadtjugendring) and regional craftsmen.

The design comprises two treehouses facing each other on different levels, connected by a large terrace. A sturdy pine runs through the terrace area. The lower treehouse is used for sleeping, and has space for eight people. The upper treehouse is where guests come together and is fitted with cooking equipment, a large dining table and a wood-burning stove for the chillier times of the year. Both treehouses have slightly vaulted roofs and are almost identical in construction. The main differences lie in the way the windows are arranged and the furnishings. The scouts’ treehouse is reached by means of a sturdy, double staircase.
