Urquiola: Tierras / 104

The Tierras collection of ceramic tiles by Patricia Urquiola for Mutina brings the dense, natural colours of the earth into the home while reviving materials of the past and forgotten productions.

The Tierras collection presented by Mutina at this year’s Design Week is a return to the “warm and familiar” dimension of a material that is rich both visually and to the touch.
As with all materials in nature, the hues of Tierras are the product of stratification: coloured pigments added to a black recycled ceramic base settle and then resurface.

Industrially produced using continuous technology, the end product is porcelain stoneware that is highly resistant and durable; a craft section of the collection is fired in the kiln adopting traditional methods.
Tierras is developed in eight colours, four browns and four greys, and features coloured joins, both tone-on-tone and in contrasting shades. There are eight formats and transversal cuts allow the creation of irregular forms that can be repositioned to create a rug.
