Among school buildings recently published on Domus Web, France holds clearly the record.

The interventions in this country are often characterized by the high quality of architectural spaces or for paying attention to the sustainability aspects, such as Les trois mondes, the school complex designed by Joly&Loiret agence d’architecture in the Ginko sustainable neighbourhood in Bordeaux, or the Zero Energy School, completed by Mikou Design in Saint Ouen (Paris) and designed in order to be emblematic of the sustainable development of the Zac des Docks project and to be a strong architectural landmark in its neighbourhood.

Part of a urban developing project is the Collège Lucie Aubrac, the campus for the secondary school designed by Coldefy & Associés Architectes Urbanistes in Tourcoing, France, that aimed to realise its integration with the urban renewal in a harmonious manner, the attempt of the Music Conservatory in Paris’s 17th arrondissement, designed by Basalt Architecture, that features a copper cladding perforated by the beat of the melody.

Among others European projects published: Ergolding School, the school designed by Behnisch Architekten and Architekturbüro Leinhäupl + Neuber where the large open atrium serves as interior meeting point and as a visual connection between departments; the Early Childhood Centre, a barn-like building to house a nursery, classrooms and a gym for the American School of The Hague in Wassenaar designed by Rotterdam-based architects Kraaijvanger; and the Denmark, where C.F. Møller designed the ISIB School, a school complex like a small town, with individual volumes (school, after-school and kindergarten) located around a square.

In New York we chose Edible Schoolyard, New York City’s first edible schoolyard, designed by WORKac transforming a half-acre of the existing parking lot into a thriving organic garden with a greenhouse, an indoor kitchen classroom and a “Systems Wall” articulated as a series of playful volumes covered in a bright blue rubber coating.

On the other side of the world, in Thailand, Supermachine Studio completed the Student Activity Center (SAC) at Bangkok University, transforming a 20 years old building that used to be a dormitory into a complex programmed public building compressed into one long sticke, whilst in Queensland (Australia), Crab Studio designed the Abedian School of Architecture, located on the campus designed by Arata Isozaki, as a long, airy loft articulated by a series of “scoops”, defining structure-enclosures that can be used for casual meetings.
