Spanish architecture studio Moral Arquitectura has recently completed the reconversion of an old winery into a restaurant in Moratinos, Palancia, Spain. Here, the former underground gallery becomes the main dining room and, and a new volume harbours the bar, kitchens and the auxiliary dependences.
The architects sought to connect the diverse spaces of the complex, and used auto-construction and vernacular architecture techniques. "The result has only been possible with the continuous,
exhaustive and experimental work along the whole
execution," states Fernando Moral Andrés.
The hill that harbours the main dining room is made up of the local soil, which features brown
rock that contributes to ideal energy conditions. The old vault was excavated and carved by hand.
In the new building, Moral Arquitectura used concrete and fixed strips
of plain, salvaged wood from the surroundings. "The work owes to the ground, which generates it and protects it," states the architect.
