Lirio by Philips

Philips has designed a new range of lighting as part of the Lirio by Philips range. Three different lighting solutions were presented at the Light+Building 2012 fair; the Nick-Knack, the Balanza and the Cielo.

From a simple, single form, Nick-Knack offers versatile possibilities for lighting and styling the space. The lamp's design was inspired by Italian graphic artist Osvaldo Cavandoli's famous La Linea animation, which drew characters using one single line. Similarly, with Nick-Knack, starting from one straight line, two hinges allow the lamp to move in any direction, creating a multitude of different shapes. By doing so you can create direct or indirect light and the minimalist shape gives maximum options for achieving a different look and light anytime. "The Nick- Knack is a prime example of how graphics have inspired design," notes Lieven Verdin, Senior Product Designer for Philips Consumer Luminaires.

The Balanza floor and table lamp range seeks to be a new variation on archetypal lamp shade: choice materials, contemporary shape and proportions. The lamp was awarded the iF Gold Award , as well as a Red Dot Award . The slant-mounted chunky metal shades of the lamp sit on top of a slim uni-color stand, to create design statement allied with lighting quality. The extra matt-colors give depth to the plain metal and all technical details are hidden, resulting in a minimalist design.

Cielo was also distinguished by both the iF Award and Red Dot . Appearing to be a traditional metal lamp shade, upon closer inspection the inside of the pendant is revealed to be hollow — appearing to have no bulb. The solid outer form contrasts with a high-tech interior, lined with integrated LEDs to illuminate the lampshade structure.
