Architectural Color at the Glass House

The new Conversations in Context series offers visitors the opportunity to join leading minds in architecture, art, landscape, history, design and preservation.

As part of the Conversations in Context series at the Philip Johnson Glass House, colorists Donald Kaufman and Taffy Dahl lead a tour through the Glass House campus.

Pioneers in the field of architectural color, colorists and artists Donald Kaufman and Taffy Dahl create unique palettes and special pigment formulations based on more than thirty years of research on the equation of color + space + light. Since 1976, Donald Kaufman Color has collaborated with the best talents in architecture and design to mix site-specific palettes, including for Philip Johnson's Glass House and New York City apartment. Kaufman's paintings can be found in the Whitney Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Hirshhorn. Johnson described him as "the rare painter who understands architecture." The team is devoted to realizing the energy of architecture—"architectural color is nothing less than the medium through which we experience architecture…it can enhance or deplete the harmony and balance of the spaces"—to illuminating the visions of architects and designers, and to ensuring that clients may recreate the luminosity and expansiveness experienced outdoors.

The new evening program Conversations in Context at the Glass House offers visitors the opportunity to join leading minds in architecture, art, landscape, history, design and preservation and experience the Glass House campus through a contemporary lens. Special guest speakers will share a personal narrative, interpretation, or inspiration with a small group of visitors while walking the site. The tour is followed by a reception at the Glass House.

Conversations in Context continues Philip Johnson's vision of the Glass House as 'not so much a home as a clearing house of ideas.' The event is part of the Glass House Conversations series, which evolved from the salons originally organized by Philip Johnson and David Whitney, into a set of invitational online dialogues exploring important multidisciplinary ideas and issues. Conversations in Context provides a bridge between the original on-site salon and the current online forum.
