The Finnish collective Kaamos Group presents a collection inspired by the long Scandinavian summers spent in cottages and outdoors when the sun never seems to set. This is exactly the opposite of the name the designers chose for themselves and that indicates the 24-hour-long winter nights in the polar regions.
Out of all the collective's hugely interesting projects, our attention was especially drawn to two lights designed by Matti Syrjälä. The Loiste (literally = sheen) lantern, glass with an ash-wood handle, combines the charm of traditional Japanese lanterns with the bare minimalism of northern European design without losing a sense of mobility and the potential for use outdoors as it can be recharged and works without an electrical socket. The other is the Loimi (warped) suspension lamp in aluminium and ash wood, the rotund shape of which suggests a dual ceiling and floor use. ES
