Recession Design 2011

The Fabbrica del Vapore is hosting My Place, sustainable design to counter the recession, from furnishing objects to a self-built living unit. With a contribution by Enzo Mari.

After the past two successful editions, the designers of Recession Design present My Place with a step up in scale from designing objects made with DIY materials to the creation of a whole self-built space that, in turn, can be customised with different interchangeable interiors. Once again, the theme is the creation of quality environments and design objects at a very low cost and based on materials that can be found in any store or hardware shop. As in previous years, assembly instruction kits will be 'open source', i.e. available for free download from the Internet.

Once again, there is also a book on the previous years' works, containing detailed instructions for making all the objects. Recession Design, Design Fai da Te, Idee contro la crisi , has just been published by Rizzoli and contains a valued foreword by Enzo Mari, who had already played with the topic in 1974 in his Autoprogettazione book.

The book will be presented at 6pm on Saturday 16 April in the Cattedrale space of the Fabbrica del Vapore, with the presence of Enzo Mari and the members of Recession Design; the speaker is Virginio Briatore. My Place will also feature a workshop, during which visitors will be guided through the creation of the objects on show. Paolo Ceresatto
