Droog Amsterdam presents Dutch fashion
accessory designer Corné Gabriëls’ new collection
“Mirror Mirror”. The exhibition is open until 16
August.
Based on augmented reality, confronting and
playful, the installation will unveil recognizable
fashion classical items, with a twist á la Gabriëls.
Printed and optical illusions are this designer’s
trademark signature yet Corné is now taking it one
step further and this time the viewer plays an
important part in the performance.
The installation consists in several vertically placed
mirror displays from which each of the collection’s
items—literally—emerge from the reflective surface
through ingenious laser cut openings. Each item is
scaled down in size in order to allow the viewers to
engage in an abstract dialogue with their reflected
image to appear as if he or she is really wearing
the item, becoming the subject or model by
attempting to find the right position, until it looks
perfect.
About Corné Gabriëls
Corné Gabriëls designs predominantly emulate
from the classical Masculine and Feminine “Garde
Robe”; often pervading a subtle poetry or a tongue-
in-cheek sense of humour. Corné is known for his
obsessive attention to details; working only with
the finest materials such as wool, leather, silk
cotton or cashmere yet confronting them with new
technologies involving digital prints and resulting in
superiorly handcrafted items that are truly unique
in character and real collector’s items. The
concepts of wearability, timelessness and
minimalism are the founding grounds of Corné’s
creative discourse which offers a new range of
idiosyncratic garment pieces which includes shirts,
ties, scarves, bags and accessories that symbolize
the ultimate archetype clothing for a smartest set
of modern dandies alike.
Corné Gabriëls works and resides in Amsterdam,
the Netherlands. After graduating from Rietveld
Academy of Arts, he attended a Masters at Fashion
Institute Arnhem. Ever since his work has been
highlighted at venues such as, Stedelijk Museum
Bureau Amsterdam, De Appel, Dutch Touch Paris,
Amsterdam International Fashion Week, Prelude by
Dutch Fashion Foundation and White Milano
Homme. Corné Gabriëls has been nominated for
international prizes including Prix de Rome,
Nouvelle Image, Robijn Fashion Awards and Festival
des Arts de la Mode Hyères. He also works on
various art exhibitions projects and designs
costumes for the leading Dutch dance company
“Introdans”; just recently, Corné designed a
costume for French Cinema Icon, Jeanne Moreau
for the “Art House” film ‘Club Mama Gemütlich’
directed by Christiaan Bastiaans.
