The atmosphere of downtown New York in a shop in Shanghai

Inspired by the styles of New York street culture, Sò Studio designs a concept store in Shanghai where industrial style and sentimental objects make an intriguing transition between the two metropolises.

A 20th and 21st century metropolis, New York and Shanghai share not only the same vibrant dynamism, but also the same aptitude for the coexistence of different architectures and their incisive reconversions. For the interior design of the showroom Canal St. Selected Store, Sò Studio looks at this convergence and finds in the "downtown temperament" a common denominator for an ideal handover between the New York store and the new opening in Shanghai.

Reinforced steel structures, live walls, industrial gratings are inserted in a space made homogeneous by a lighting design that marks the presence of neon and large light panels. Linear displays in iron and coloured boxes add further stratifications, segmenting the distribution of goods and the passage between the different environments that are made communicating through the demolition of some pre-existing walls. At the center of the showroom, a room explicitly mentions the mythical atmosphere of New York’s subway, recreating a sentimental environment through the introduction of classic memorabilia such as chairs, tiles and handles.
