VitrA and Snøhetta bring a dialogue of ceramic and light to Milan Design Week

With the installation “Ceramic Forged in Light”, the global brand of bathroom solutions and surfaces teams up with the Norwegian firm to create an experience where light and water enhance the qualities of a material shaped by visions of reuse and sustainability.

Amid the many voices animating Milan during Design Week 2026, VitrA has chosen to center its presence on silence; or rather, on an invitation to contemplation, with an installation placing material at its core, allowing the innovation behind its processes to reach visitors through those very sensory channels that forge the essential relationship between people and design. “Ceramic Forged in Light” is a reflection developed by the brand – renowned for its integrated production of bathroom producta and tiles – in collaboration with an internationally acclaimed firm such as Snøhetta. It unfolds as an immersive environment where water, light, sound engage in dialogue, forming a narrative that stages the transition from raw earth to its ongoing regeneration.

The space evokes the architecture of ancient thermal baths, where light filters from above through ceiling oculi, triggering a primordial choreography of sun, air, and matter. Objects – washbasins and tiles – become essential presences, capturing and reflecting subtle shifts in light and perception. A central pool acts as both a mirror and a focal point, amplifying the surrounding geometries and inviting visitors to see material as something alive, in constant transformation. Light itself becomes a metaphor for fire, the transformative force that turns raw clay into ceramic designed to endure over time. The installation is permeated by the principle circular design: a vision guiding VitrA toward a circular production model, based on reintegrating industrial waste back into the manufacturing cycle, reducing the use of natural resources and minimizing environmental impact. The materials, products, and surfaces featured in “Ceramic Forged in Light” articulate this new aesthetic of recycling not as a constraint, but as a design opportunity.

Recycled Tiles, porcelain tiles made with 100% recycled content, are among the protagonists of this spatial choreography, alongside the Recycled Washbasin, the first produced entirely from recycled ceramic. This products marks a turning point for the sector: developed from production waste, it significantly reduces environmental impact, improving energy efficiency and lowering raw material consumption without compromising quality, durability, or aesthetics. Ultimately, the narrative VitrA brings to Milan Design Week is one of a trans-scalar vision, organic and innovative, extending from the scale of sensory experience to that of an entire production system. With a history spanning nearly 70 years and now part of the Eczacıbaşı Group, VitrA stands among the few global brands capable of offering a fully integrated ecosystem of bathroom solutions and architectural surfaces. It is a story that bridges scale – from 16 manufacturing facilities to a distribution network reaching approximately 90 countries – and a sustainability-driven approach at every stage, from resource management to the adoption of renewable energy. VitrA’s trans-scalar vision points toward a definition of future of which each single aspect is explored: a future in which matter is never consumed, but continuously transformed and regenerated through design.
