Continuing to grow is the “Crystal Palace” by Nadja Swarovski, that since 2002 has been inviting the most interesting international designers to rethink the classical and traditional concept of the chandelier, combining art, light and design. Unleashing their imaginations this year are Basso & Brooke with a design that lies between tradition and innovation where each single glass drop is different and Jurgen Bey, designer of a chandelier that when it is turned off becomes almost invisible. Laurene and Constantin Boym have made a series of chandelier-rugs, whilst fashion designer Hussein Chayalan puts forward a conceptual installation made in two distinct parts that are linked where the glass drops are illuminated by LEDs. Japanese Naoto Fukasawa also plays with light and has designed two large circles in mid air connected by an ultramodern technological film. Designs also by Gaetano Pesce, Michael Gabellini, Ineke Hans, Simon Heijdens and Chris Levine. The most novel piece however is by Welsh designer Ross Lovegrove who, together with Sharp Solar Europe, Swarovski and General Motors, is developing a concept car for future generations, with a hybrid solar-petrol engine, uniting good design and sustainability.
