The thirty-year long and extremely fruitful collaboration between Isamu Noguchi (1904-88) and dancer/choreographer Martha Graham began in 1935 with the dance performance Frontier, which contributed to a revolution in contemporary set design. “Transforming the space into a volume to treat as if it were a sculpture” was the idea behind Noguchi’s approach.
The results of their work now feature in a major exhibition curated by Bonnie Rychlak for the Noguchi Museum on Long Island. Forming the centre of the exhibition are 9 sets and 35 props designed especially for the dance performances. E.S.
