Ladislav Sutnar: Designer in two Worlds

Organised by the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague and the Cooper-Hewitt in New York, the first retrospective to deal with the work of Ladislav Sutnar looks at the two lives of the Bohemian designer: one in his homeland and the other his subsequent experiences in the United States.

350 products (from toys to town plans, posters, books and exhibition designs) make up a collection that pays homage to one of the most important pioneers of modern design.

Strenuous asserter of the need for clarity and cleanliness in graphic information he often said: “without effective typographic characters, the pilot of a jet can’t read his instruments quickly enough to survive. New means should be invented to keep up with the speed of industry. Graphic design has always had to develop increasingly high standards for transmitting information”. E.S.
