The Opulent Eye of Alexander Girard

Bringing knowledge and appreciation of modern design to millions around the world, Alexander Girard mixed traditional and contemporary elements from a wide variety of cultures to produce some of the most spectacular interiors of the 20th Century. Now a major exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt in New York is dedicated to his world of exuberant colours and designs, organised under three headings; Home, Travel and Display each combined with a selection of fabrics designed by Girard during the fifties and sixties. A large number of the exhibits, whilst already forming a part of the museum’s collection, have never been on show to the public. Designs and collages for textiles, the Cut Out collection designed for the house of Irwin Miller at Columbus; accessories and designs for the restaurant La Fonda del Sol in New York, a number of pieces from Girard’s collection of folk art, furniture and posters for the campaign designed for Braniff International Airlines as well as a special installation for the National Design Museum Café.
