Earlier this year, nine designers used an all too rare opportunity offered by a furniture manufacturer, London based Oreka, to explore a design brief to each create individual pieces of furniture for children. This is an area of huge potential creatively, to which we benefit in giving closer attention to, observing real everyday activities, understanding how children regard the identity of the objects they love to play with and why, as well as defining the desirable extent of how far suggested functions might coexist. Art directed by Simon Maidment and Michael Marriott, the Biscuit collection, as the range was titled, evolved from a brief the duo set to Jane Atfield, Shin and Tomoko Azumi, Sebastian Bergne, Stephen Bretland, Matthew Hilton, Alex Macdonald, Andrew Stafford – and each other, as fellow designers in the group.
