On April 4, 2019, some 2000 migrants announced their intention to march from the northern Greek port of Thessaloniki to the border with northern Macedonia, some 60 kilometres to the north. Then they want to travel on to Central Europe.

Around 4500 refugees and migrants live there. They have been forced to settle around the island's so-called hotspot, a former prison which, behind its steel fences reinforced with barbed wire, offers space for just 650 people.

Still, a few have not given up hope. Some try to smuggle themselves into ferries at the western port of Patras to get to Italy, a dangerous passage.
