“Rationalism on Set” is a monographic exhibition that explores the little-known period in the history of Italian cinema between the two wars of the early twentieth century. The show highlights the strongly Modernist influence in the interiors of the romantic comedies of the time. A selection of vintage photographs are exhibited, with the complement of film clips, sketches and contemporary periodicals found at the National Film Library, the Experimental Cinematography Center (Rome), the Cineteca di Bologna, the Museo Nazionale del Cinema (Turin) and the Riba collection. The exhibition fills a void: until recently, Italy's contributions to architecture and cinema in the 1930s did not arouse interest. In time, however, the recognition of the important role that cinema has played in the dissemination of modern architecture has arrived; some architects, like Giuseppe Capponi, were personally involved in the sets.
