Karla Black brings carnival at the Modern Art gallery in London

Scottish artist uses heterogeneous materials in her art pieces realized in the specific spaces of the gallery.

Karla Black Installation view L’École des Beaux-Arts de Paris 20 October 2017 – 7 January 2018

This is the third solo exhibition of Karla Black at London's Modern Art gallery. The materials are many and the effect is a carnival sweat: petroleum jelly, plastic bottles, paper and plaster. For the artist the material has the priority over other elements, such as narrative, form, symbols, and potential narrative.

The gallery's spaces, with their neutral walls, are well matched by the pure creativity of the artist. The materials used color the scene with a carnival effect.
