At the MADRE museum in Naples, a major exhibition is running until April 28 dedicated to this German photographer, one of the leading exponents of the Düsseldorf School. Around 60 photographs varying in size describe his extraordinary career, which began in the late 1970s with black-and-white urban views that described architecture and its inhabitants.

Other series followed over the subsequent decades: natural landscapes, religious places, portraits and the famous series Museum Photographs in which Struth uses large-scale photos to depict museum visitors intent on admiring works of art. The artist uses actors to create a sample of visitor types and takes pictures of them from various viewpoints to create a complex exchange network between the different means of representation. Also on show in Naples is I Paradisi, shots of uncontaminated, natural, almost inaccessible locations. Silvia Monaco
