The title of the first edition of the new Moscow Contemporary Art Biennial is “Dialectics of hope”. The intention of the curators (Joseph Backstein, Daniel Birnbaum, Iara Boubnova, Nicolas Bourriaud, Rosa Martinez, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Robert Storr) is to highlight how the concept of hope has changed as a result of the historical upheaval of the last twenty years. Now a long way off from a collective and social ideal, hope becomes an increasingly intimate and private thing, linked to the “here and now”. It also reflects the current disorientation caused by the definitive collapse of the utopias of the modern age, of which Russia is today perhaps the most contradictory emblem. F.C.
