Olivo Barbieri: Montréal seen by helicopter
At the CAA in Montreal, photographer Olivo Barbieri from the Emilia region in Italy, shows his most recent work: 16 photographs commissioned by the Canadian museum last spring that show the city as seen from a helicopter. The photographs make up part of the project “Site Specific” that since 1978 has kept the photographer busy all over the world in a continual search for contemporary urban settings to photograph, always from above.
From a distance, architecture is seen in miniature and the urban fabric is transformed into a giant model, with passer bys and cars reduced to microscopic presences. In Montreal, Barbieri’s images concentrate on a particular period, the 1960s, a crucial decade of growth and major change for the capital of Quebec that saw its with the universal expo of 1967, to which the Canadian museum dedicates an extensive exhibition.
