??Zt?next six years the undulating titanium sculpture designed by Frank Gehry will remain in place, in other words on the roof of the Guggenheim Museum in New York where it was installed in May 2001 to coincide with the exhibition of work by the Canadian architect.
To decide unanimously its fate last week was the Landmarks Preservation Commission which judged the sculpture to be an elegant and unobtrusive piece of art, not an addition to the building.
Amongst the opposition however are those who believe it to be inappropriate and consider it an alteration of Wright’s original design, icon and symbol of the big apple. Or others still who consider the Guggenheims move a mere branding exercise, a bit like the recurring yellow M of the McDonalds logo.
After six years, the Guggenheim will have to remove the piece and renew the request to leave it where it is.
