Matthew Barney and his Cremaster Cycle in Cologne

The Ludwig museum in Cologne is showing a major exhibition on the series of films by Matthew Barney “The Cremaster”. As well as offering a preview in Europe of the latest episode of the saga, “Cremaster 3”, it will be showing the four previous episodes of the series as well as story boards, photographs, sculptures, drawings and props taken from the making of the films by the visual artist. Amongst the basic characteristics of the films is that each one is set in a particular geographical or architectural place. Barney uses the landscape and architecture as facets of the plot and of the characters.

The themes central to his work are the human body, sagas, myths, all elements which are used in his films to create fantastical images with a strong attraction. The mythical characters which are conceived by Barney possess a fictitious sexuality which goes beyond any characterisation, whilst the different plots are developed simultaneously, like dreams.

“The Cremaster Cycle” will then move to the Musée d’Art de la Ville in Paris before going on to the Guggenheim Museum in New York who have sponsored the project.
