Museums for a new Millennium

The exhibition of the most important museums built, designed or under construction in the past ten years has now reached the Milwaukee Art Museum. Curated by Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani and Angeli Sachsu, it had already been mounted last year at the Castello di Rivoli. "Museums for a New Millennium: Concepts, Projects, Building" is a collection of photographs, drawings and original models of 25 museums.

The list includes the milestones of contemporary architecture, from Norman Foster’s Carré d’Art at Nîmes of 1984 to the futuristic Cincinnati Center by Zaha Hadid. An important section is devoted to the extension of the museum itself, designed by Calatrava. His new wing was inaugurated last October and will house the museum’s permanent collection. The extension comprises a reception hall which has a wide glazed front overlooking the lake and is linked to the central body of the museum by a bridge, plus an impressively large sun-shield.
